David Muir took a surprising turn during Monday night’s broadcast of ABC World News Tonight, pausing the flow of the program to point toward his screen with a bewildered question. After asking viewers what they were looking at, the veteran journalist revealed breathtaking imagery captured over Florida during a pre-dawn SpaceX launch to the International Space Station. The visuals showed a massive, glowing entity stretching across the horizon, leaving many early morning commuters and families from Orlando to Washington D.C. questioning if they had witnessed something supernatural.
As it turns out, the ethereal sight was a scientific occurrence known as a space jellyfish. According to NASA data shared during the segment, this phenomenon happens when a rocket’s exhaust plume is illuminated by the sun while the ground remains in darkness, typically occurring around sunrise or sunset. Muir highlighted how the glow reached as far north as Tennessee and North Carolina, describing the event as simple yet spectacular and reminding his audience that despite its name, this particular jellyfish carries no sting.
While scientists celebrated the atmospheric display, the footage sparked an intense and polarized debate among viewers on social media. While many praised the majesty of the launch, others used the moment to push conspiracy theories regarding a solid dome or firmament covering the Earth. Some skeptics questioned why such sightings seemed more frequent now than in previous decades of space travel, leading to heated exchanges between those defending modern astrophysics and those clinging to ancient cosmological beliefs.
Beyond the celestial fireworks, the broadcast followed a period of brief tension for Muir himself, who recently stepped away from his anchor desk amid reported turmoil within the ABC network. In a rare move following his return to air, Muir shifted gears from global news to personal life by posting an intimate snapshot of his special companion on social media, offering fans a glimpse into his private world after his unexpected absence from the studio.
